The writing from various ancient sites such as Mohenjo Daro, Harappa, Kot Diji, (in India) has never been deciphered. There are linguists who point out the similarity between the writings and that of undeciphered Rongo Rongo writing from Easter Island.
At this time, ancient Dravidian, related to Tamil, is being used to attempt to decipher the Harappan writing.
There is no explaining the Rongo Rongo script. A European named Eugene Eyraud became aware of them in 1864, but even then the islanders had no idea about the meaning of the script which was carved into the wooden tablets with a sharp stone.
The complete name of the tablets is ko hau motu mo rongorongo, which means "lines of script for recitation." According to legend, Hotu Matua brought some of these tablets to the island along with a group of learned people who were well-versed in the art of writing and reciting the inscriptions.
There are hundreds of different symbols on them, including birds, animals, celestial objects, and geometric forms.
It is said that there were three types. One recorded hymns in honor of divine beings, another recorded crimes, and the third recorded those who had died in war or other conflicts. Those recording genealogies might have existed also.
Many attempts to translate the tablets have failed.
